"The name ‘Tideline’ refers to the sinuous mark of natural and artificial debris left after the ocean's high tide retreats. Every tidal cycle, elements are replaced and new compositions are created and revealed. Capturing these temporary still lives is the conceptual framework for Tideline's narrative and tangible output. Tideline is where memories and fantasies are explored, a place where the underlying transience of our being is celebrated."
Tideline Studio is an Antwerp based creative universe for production and presentation run by Jeroen MAES (BE) and Ryoko SATO (JP). Maes and Sato have a common background in glass, but each have a very different approach in the process of making.
Jeroen MAES (1977), trained as a glass researcher, maker and restorer, was one of the founders of the glass museum GlazenHuis in Lommel, Belgium, in 2007. In addition to his position as artistic director, he has been focusing on his personal creations since 2018. He develops a modular framework with colorful hand-blown glass elements to turn them into light objects or art installations. In terms of form, color and texture, he makes references to postmodernist styles and pop culture.
Ryoko SATO (1972) is an observer and a creator. She is interested in investigating fragments of everyday life. Her work is about making sense of the ever-shifting norms and values across culture and time. She picks up seemingly insignificant "things" and turns them into objects, which are personal and slightly confrontational. She aims to create a new relationship between the viewer and materials that are mostly forgotten, broken or destined to be thrown out.
